Guatemala recently hosted the Central American and Caribbean Games Qualification Regatta on the stunning Lake Petén Itzá, welcoming 11 nations from Mexico to Colombia, along with three Caribbean countries: Cuba, Puerto Rico, and the Dominican Republic — the latter set to host the Games in 2026 in Santo Domingo.
Mexico led the medal tally with a dominant performance, followed by Venezuela and Cuba. Guatemala not only delivered a well-organised regatta but also showcased emerging talent, particularly through young Lesli González, a promising athlete poised to lead the country’s women’s rowing team.
Venezuela and the Dominican Republic benefited from the experience of seasoned athletes, including former Olympians José Guipe and Ignacio Vázquez. Colombia was represented by Rodrigo Ideus, who competed in the 2008 Beijing Olympics and is currently pursuing qualification in Winter Sports for the upcoming Olympic Games.
