From October 6th to 14th, 2024, World Rowing organised a milestone coach educators’ course in Hong Kong, aimed at training the trainers (coach educators) across Asia. This initiative is part of World Rowing’s ongoing efforts to develop a robust framework which focuses on ensuring that coaches can plan, deliver, and evaluate training sessions effectively, promoting a safe and equitable environment for all athletes.
A key component of this initiative is the development of a well-trained team of coach educators. These educators are crucial for maintaining the consistency and quality of coach education worldwide. The course in Hong Kong aimed to bring together a group of future World Rowing (WR) Coach Educators, who will play a pivotal role in rolling out the WR Coach Development Programme and expanding educational opportunities for coaches across Asia.
The course was led by Rosie Mayglothling, World Rowing Head of Coach Education; Ella Willott, World Rowing Coach Educator; and Chris Perry, World Rowing Lead Development Coaching Expert for Asia. They were supported by the World Rowing Development team and staff members from the Hong Kong Rowing Association. The course followed the WR Level 1 syllabus, covering Classic, Coastal, and Para Rowing. It included training on facilitation skills, presentation techniques, and effective education methodologies.
The course saw participation from 18 coaches representing South Korea, Indonesia, India, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Malaysia, the Philippines, Sri Lanka, Thailand, and host Hong Kong.
Participants and experts were accommodated at the Chinese Y.M.C.A Wu Kwai Sha Youth Village. The practical and theoretical components of the course were conducted at locations within walking distance of the accommodation, ensuring convenience and accessibility for all attendees. During the week, the World Rowing team and participant coaches visited the Hong Kong China Rowing Association headquarters and the Jockey Club Sha Tin Rowing Center.
In addition to rowing specific training, the course addressed critical topics such as anti-doping, safeguarding athletes from harassment and abuse, and preventing competition manipulation. These topics are essential for fostering a safe and fair sporting environment.
By the end of the training, six coaches were deemed competent to co-deliver coach education courses in Asia; all participants received the Coastal Race Module certificate and the Classic Level 1 Award, while six coaches were identified to be further trained in future World Rowing Coach Educators training to continue their journey and pathway towards becoming certified WR coach educators.
The course represented a significant milestone in World Rowing’s efforts to enhance coaching standards and promote the sport’s development across the Asian continent.
