On 30 July 2024, the World Rowing Development Programme donated four Kanghua coastal solo boats and three double boats to Sri Lanka Rowing Federation. These boats were acquired through the Development of National Sports System (DNSS) project in Coastal Rowing, with significant support from Olympic Solidarity and the Sri Lanka National Olympic Committee.
This initiative marks the first Coastal Rowing project in Sri Lanka, highlighting the sport’s potential, especially in the beach sprints format. This format is included in the Youth Olympic Games 2026 and the Olympic Games 2028 in Senegal and Los Angeles, respectively.
The new fleet will support the continuation of the DNSS project, which runs until 15 November 2024. It aims to leave a lasting legacy by promoting and expanding Coastal Rowing in Sri Lanka. Access to Rowing boats and equipment has been a significant challenge in promoting Rowing. This donation helps overcome this barrier, enabling Sri Lanka Rowing Federation to maintain a sustainable national calendar that includes regular beach sprints and coastal Rowing training and competitions beyond the DNSS timeline.
Currently, the boats are stored at the Diyawanna Rowing Centre. They will be transported to Port City Colombo for practical sessions during the second DNSS visit planned for end of August 2024. These boats will be temporarily housed at the Diyawanna Rowing Centre until a permanent location is identified by the Federation.
