A two-year Development of National Sports System (DNS) initiative by World Rowing is advancing the growth of rowing in Nigeria. The focus is on building a sustainable and inclusive rowing ecosystem.
The project incorporated multifaceted objectives: upskilling coaches, improving officiating standards, talent identification, expanding equipment inventory, and developing strategic governance practices.
Key activities included delivery of a Level 1 coaching framework, conducting an umpiring course integrated with practical application, and assessing the current rowing infrastructure to create an action plan for future progress and growth.
Additionally, the project has fostered elite rowing development, and aims to support athletes’ participation in key regional, continental, and international competitions. As an ongoing development, support will target the establishment of a sustainable administrative and talent development system.
Led by World Rowing Coach Educator Sahbi Khardani and World Rowing Umpire and Umpiring Commission Member Ines Hammami, in person training took place from 18 – 24 October in Abuja, Nigeria. The Level 1 coaching course had nine coaches (five female, four male), while the NTO training had ten officials (four female, six male) actively participating.
Anticipated outcomes cover a range of key indicators over the next few years, from more robust governance systems, visible talent pathways, and education programs as well as the strengthening of the para rowing, coastal, and indoor formats.
With increased emphasis on inclusivity and gender balance, Nigeria’s rowing scene is set to benefit from the strengthened technical expertise, expanded fleet (six classic and five coastal boats), and ongoing support for a comprehensive rowing development system.
