Lesotho on course for development through conclusion of ground breaking Olympic Solidarity programme

The Lesotho Rowing Federation (LRF) marked a significant milestone with the final DNSS (Development of National Sports Systems) visit held from November 16 to 21, 2024. Led by World Rowing Development expert Sizwe Ndlovu, the visit aimed to consolidate the progress made throughout the project and lay the groundwork for sustainable rowing development in Lesotho. This was the core objective of this important project supported by Olympic Solidarity.

The week-long programme featured theoretical sessions on rigging, planning, risk and safety management, and coaching methodologies. Practical on-water activities further enhanced the participants’ skills and understanding of rowing.

While the project faced challenges, such as the need to tailor plans to local contexts, valuable lessons were learned. The proximity to South Africa, a more established rowing nation, provides a strategic advantage for the LRF to access guidance and support.

Looking ahead, the success of the project hinges on the LRF’s commitment to making rowing development a priority. Plans include diversifying funding sources, strengthening collaborations with stakeholders, and building capacity across all levels. Additionally, the federation has implemented a maintenance plan for equipment and infrastructure to ensure a self-sustaining system that supports long-term growth.

World Rowing acknowledges its partnership with Concept2, which continues to play a vital role in providing equipment, such as the sculling oars donated to the Lesotho Rowing Federation, to support its development programmes. World Rowing appreciates the support of the South African Rowing Federation (RowSA) in advancing the development of rowing in Lesotho by assisting identifying and securing essential equipment, namely boats.

Beyond sports, the rowing initiative holds potential for broader community impact. It aims to address social issues such as gender inclusion, water safety, and environmental sustainability, while fostering youth and community development.

The LRF’s efforts through the DNSS project highlight the transformative power of sports to inspire change and build a brighter future for the nation.
