Mauritania is taking its first strategic steps toward developing Rowing, with the support of World Rowing, following an official mission carried out on 7–8 May 2026.
During the visit, strong institutional commitment to rowing development was clearly evident. High-level engagement from national authorities was highlighted, including the active support of the Minister of Youth Empowerment, Employment, Sports and Civic Service, Mr. Mohamed Abdallah Ouled Louly, and the President of the Mauritanian National Olympic and Sports Committee (CNOSM), Mr. Abdallah Ouled Othman.
Regional leadership also demonstrated alignment with this ambition. The Governor of Trarza, Mr. Ahmedna Ouled Sid Aba, together with representatives from the CNOSM and the Mauritanian Rowing Federation, expressed their readiness to contribute to the successful implementation of this emerging sport.
According to Fayçal Soula, Mauritania presents exceptional potential for rowing development, particularly in coastal Rowing. The country benefits from a diverse range of natural water environments and a promising base of human resources that could support the sport’s growth.
Several key locations were identified as suitable for rowing activities, including Rosso along the Senegal River, the port and surrounding beaches of Nouakchott, the Bay of Arguin, and the extensive waterways of Nouadhibou. These sites offer strong foundations for both recreational and competitive Rowing.
However, the mission also highlighted critical needs to enable progress. Access to boats and specialised equipment remains the primary challenge to launching structured rowing activities across the country.
At the conclusion of the mission, Fayçal Soula commended the leadership of the Mauritanian Rowing Federation, in particular its President, Ms. Mimouna Yahdhia, and Vice-President, Mr. Ahmed Bouhbini. He recognised their professionalism, dedication, and strong commitment to advancing Rowing in Mauritania.
This mission marks an important first step toward establishing Rowing in Mauritania, laying the groundwork for future development initiatives and long-term growth of the sport.
