Rowing Momentum Builds in American Samoa: Youth Engagement, Equipment Revival, and Community Outreach

Rowing in American Samoa is entering an exciting new chapter, following a recent development visit from September 25 to October 2, 2025. The visit marked a key milestone in expanding youth participation, strengthening local capacity, and laying the groundwork for future growth.

Led by World Rowing Development Coaching Expert for Oceania, Laryssa Biesenthal OLY, in collaboration with local coach Paula MacDonald and the American Samoa Rowing Federation, the programme focused on introducing beach sprint Rowing to schools, revitalizing equipment, and engaging the broader community. Over 60 students from Pacific Horizons School and South Pacific Academy took part in interactive Rowing sessions, learning the basics of technique, testing peak power on ergometers, and participating in relay races. Several teachers and parents also expressed interest in supporting future coaching efforts.

To complement the outreach, the team conducted a full inventory and maintenance check of the island’s Rowing fleet. Boats were cleaned, rigged, and assessed for spare parts, with plans underway to order necessary components ahead of the next visit in January 2026. A preliminary calendar of events was drafted, including athlete monitoring periods and local regattas, helping to establish a more structured pathway for training and competition.

The visit also included a local radio segment with Paula, Laryssa, and American Samoa Rowing Federation President Louis Solaita, promoting rowing opportunities and inviting youth to an Open Day on October 25. This event will offer hands-on experiences for new rowers, supported by current athletes and volunteers.

This initiative is part of the Development of National Sports System project, supported by Olympic Solidarity through the American Samoa National Olympic Committee. The project aims to strengthen sport structures and expand opportunities for athletes, coaches, and administrators across the island.

With its stunning coastal conditions and growing interest from youth and educators, American Samoa is poised to become a vibrant hub for beach sprint rowing in the Pacific. The next development visit is scheduled for January 15–24, 2026, with plans to continue building local capacity.
