Varese, Italy – July 31, 2026
Alongside the sporting action, the Varese Organising Committee delivered one of the most ambitious sustainability programmes seen at a European Rowing Championship. Developed under the theme“Rowing together for sport, people and the planet,” the Sustainability Plan aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, the World Rowing Sustainability Strategy and ISO 20121 sustainable event management principles
A strong focus was placed on protecting Lake Varese, with biodiversity awareness campaigns, environmental partnerships and clean-up initiatives designed to protect and enhance the local ecosystem. Athletes were encouraged to take actions to help prevent the spread of invasive species, while environmental organisations were actively involved in delivering sustainability activities throughout the event
The Championships also implemented a range of practical measures to reduce environmental impacts, including water refill stations to minimise single-use plastic bottles, digital event documentation, comprehensive waste-separation systems, sustainable procurement practices, local and seasonal catering options, and the use of hybrid and electric vehicles. Transport planning, accommodation selection and carbon footprint monitoring were also incorporated into the event’s sustainability strategy.
Equally important was the event’s commitment to inclusion, accessibility, wellbeing and education. Sustainability training for staff and volunteers, accessibility measures for participants and spectators, anti-discrimination policies and dedicated sustainability communications helped ensure that sustainability was embedded throughout the event experience.
By combining athlete development opportunities with a comprehensive sustainability programme, the 2026 European Rowing Championships demonstrated how major rowing events can create lasting benefits both on and off the water. The event serves as an excellent example of how sport can support athlete growth, strengthen emerging rowing nations and contribute positively to people, communities and the environment.
