The 2024 Genoa World Rowing Beach Sprint Championships were hosts to the most recent development initiative, the Technical Delegate Development Programme. This programme is aimed to provide current and future Beach Sprint Technical delegates with the foundation knowledge to be successful in the role.
World Rowing has taken the WRBSF opportunity in Genoa to start building a network of Technical Delegate Educators, aiming at having at least one educator in each continent, to help support and grow the continental standards.
The Course covered the following modules:
- Welcome to the Beach Sprint Technical Delegate (TD) Course.
- The role of a TD.
- What Skills does a TD need?
- Venue – Beach, water and wider areas.
- Field of play requirements, equipment and boats.
- Land infrastructure.
- Race schedule, progression, timing and results.
- Personnel – Umpires. Organising Committees, volunteers, etc..
- On water safety, rescue and medical services.
- Ceremonies.
- Event presentation, announcers, commentators and broadcast.
- Communication and decision making.
- Bid Visits, site visits, bulletins and meetings.
- TD’s role during the regatta.
- End of competition.
- Close and Personal development.
This programme will support Rowing National Federations build their Beach Sprint human capacity, alongside coaching, umpiring, athletes. It will also contribute to improving the quality (fairness and safety) of the regional / continental beach sprint events.
Thank you to the World Rowing Coastal Education lead, Guin Batten, for developing the resources and working with the first Continental Technical Delegate Educators: Manuel Pita (POR), Sahbi Khardani (TUN), Victoria Aguirregomezcorta (ARG), Marcelo Santos (BRA), Victor Wing Ning (HKG), Will Daly USA.
A second course is planned for November in New Zealand, targeting new Educators to build capacity in Oceania.
